The RAK electric bus has officially arrived, and Ras Al Khaimah residents are getting a bonus that is hard to ignore: free rides for an entire month.

The Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority (RAKTA) launched the emirate’s first electric bus on June 3, rolling it out on an upgraded version of the Purple Route. Until early July, passengers can hop on without paying a single dirham.

No ticket. No fare. Just get on and go.

The Purple Route Just Got Bigger

This isn’t just a new vehicle hitting the streets.

RAKTA has expanded the Purple Route by 14 kilometres, connecting more of the city through key destinations including government offices, hospitals, schools, universities, and Manar Mall.

The route now operates 12 trips per day across nine major stops, giving commuters more frequent connections and shorter waiting times.

For residents who rely on public transport daily, it is one of the biggest upgrades the network has seen in years.

Why Everyone Is Talking About It

Electric buses are becoming a major part of how cities are reducing emissions, cutting fuel costs, and modernising public transport.

For Ras Al Khaimah, this launch is another step in a wider push toward greener mobility.

The emirate already introduced Tesla taxis in recent years, and the new electric bus signals that RAKTA is moving ahead with plans to expand sustainable transport options across the city.

Officials have also outlined ambitions to increase urban public transport coverage from 55 percent to 65 percent by the end of 2026.

What Happens After the Free Period?

The free-ride promotion runs until early July 2026.

After that, passengers can either pay the regular AED 8 fare or use an E-Saqr card for travel across the network.

The offer applies only to the Purple Route. Existing Red, Blue, and Green routes continue operating under their normal fare structures.

Why This Matters

Public transport in Ras Al Khaimah has traditionally been more limited than in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

That is why this launch feels bigger than just another bus announcement.

A longer route, more frequent trips, better city connectivity, and an entire month of free rides make the RAK electric bus one of the most practical transport upgrades residents have seen this year.

And for now, trying it costs absolutely nothing.
