Dubai’s streets are getting a serious seasonal upgrade. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Dubai Future Foundation, has directed a large-scale flame tree planting drive that Dubai Municipality is now rolling out emirate-wide. With more than 50,000 flame trees already planted and thousands more on the way, the city is heading into its most colorful summer yet.
Sheikh Hamdan’s Announcement
The initiative was confirmed during a meeting with Dubai Municipality and the Dubai Future Foundation. Sheikh Hamdan also shared an animated video on his official X account to mark the start of the flame tree season, along with a statement that captured the spirit of the campaign.
“In summer, when the flame tree blooms in Dubai, it brings life to every home, every majlis, every street, and every park. With it, our city blooms, full of life and beauty,” the Crown Prince said.
Sheikh Hamdan also directed the distribution of flame tree seedlings to residents wishing to plant them in homes or farms, encouraging wider community participation.
What Is a Flame Tree?
The flame tree, which goes by the scientific name Delonix regia, is known for its bright orange and red flowers and typically blooms in Dubai from May until the end of July, adding a vibrant color to the city’s urban landscape.
It is also one of the most practical trees for the region. The flame tree is known for its rapid growth in its early years and naturally forms a wide canopy that can span up to 15 metres, without the need for extensive care. It can also reduce ground temperature beneath it by about 5 degrees Celsius.
The tree is well suited to Dubai’s hot and humid climate and can be planted in well-drained sandy or clay soil, providing a suitable environment for root growth. For a city that runs at 40°C in the summer months, that kind of natural shade is a significant addition to any public space.
Where the Trees Are Going
Dubai Municipality confirmed the planting drive is now underway, with the iconic tree set to be planted in streets, residential areas, public parks, entertainment spaces, vital intersections, and community majlises in several parts of the emirate.
The scale is already significant. More than 50,000 flame trees have already been planted in Dubai’s roads, parks and public spaces, reflecting years of deliberate investment in the city’s green landscape.
What to Expect This Summer
Beyond the visual impact, flame trees will bring genuine environmental relief to some of the city’s busiest areas. The shade they produce reduces surface temperatures and improves outdoor comfort during the hottest weeks of the year. That is why this particular tree was chosen, not just for its famous fiery canopy, but for what it actually does to the environment around it.
The free seedling distribution is another layer to the initiative. Residents who want to plant a flame tree in their private home or on a farm can request seedlings directly, which means this campaign has a real community dimension to it. It is not a top-down beautification effort. It is an open invitation for the public to take part.
