Dubai’s grassroots creative scene is getting its official moment this Friday. Rooted, a month-long cultural program produced by five local creative communities, launches with “The Sketchy Opening” at Warehouse 34, Alserkal Avenue. Hosted by Karama Arts Club, the night runs from 7:30PM to 10:30PM on May 8, and it is free and open to anyone who wants to show up.
What Is Rooted
Rooted is a month-long cultural curation at Alserkal Avenue, described by its organizers as a living, slightly chaotic creative playground for Dubai’s grassroots communities. The project was selected for Blank Space, a free Alserkal Avenue initiative that gives creative collectives access to a warehouse for four weeks, complete with utilities, materials, and promotional support at no cost.
Five communities have come together to produce a full month of programming out of Warehouse 34. The schedule includes talks, workshops, film screenings, music acts, and fashion content. The warehouse will serve as their shared base for the month, with each community adding its own strand to the live program.
The Five Communities Behind Rooted
Rooted is a joint project by five Dubai-based creative communities:
Karama Arts Club is a neighborhood arts community known for accessible, low-barrier creative events in the city.
Urban Sketchers Dubai is the local chapter of the international Urban Sketchers network, with members who document Dubai in real time through illustration.
Fashion Revolution UAE is the UAE arm of the global Fashion Revolution movement, which advocates for transparency and ethics in the fashion industry.
Film Society DXB organizes independent film screenings for Dubai’s cinephile community.
alterna.tiv is a music and alternative culture platform with a presence in Dubai’s independent scene.
All five communities are part of the Rooted programming committee for the month.
What to Expect at the Opening Night
The launch event is called “The Sketchy Opening” for a reason. It is a night of doodling, open conversation, and what the organizers describe as creative chaos. Guests are invited to walk in, check out the Rooted wall installations, and meet the people who put it all together. The gallery wall, which artist CaptainBarboza has been putting together at Warehouse 34, will be on display throughout the night.
“The Sketchy Opening” delivers exactly what the name promises. It is a night of doodling, open conversation, and what the organizers call creative chaos. Guests are invited to walk in, check out the Rooted wall installations, and meet the people who put it all together. POSCA, the art supply brand popular in Dubai’s street art and illustration community, is a partner for the evening. Woodish Restaurant and Café handles the food.
Vinyl DJs Jayesh and Frezidante will provide the music from start to finish. There is no ticket, no dress code, and no agenda other than showing up. The message from Rooted is as direct as it gets: come as you are, leave your mark.

Why This Matters
A coordinated, month-long program with five communities sharing one warehouse, no ticket prices, and a full public-facing schedule is genuinely rare in any city. Blank Space, the Alserkal Avenue initiative behind this, was designed to remove financial barriers for creative collectives, providing warehouse space and support at no cost. Rooted is what that initiative looks like when the right communities take the opportunity seriously. The programming spans five disciplines, and the month is just getting started.
Rooted does not have a corporate sponsor on the poster or a velvet rope at the door. It has walls to draw on, vinyl playing all night, and five communities who put in the work to make it happen. The Sketchy Opening starts this Friday at 7:30PM. Warehouse 34, Alserkal Avenue. Show up.
